Regardless what industry you are in, if you are doing your business online, take note if these common mistakes by online entrepreneurs.
7 Online Marketing Mistakes To Avoid
Mistake #1 – You don’t have a niche
If you are talking to everyone, you are talking to no one.
Spreading yourself too thinly by trying to sell everything to everyone often gets little result and will only get you burnt out.
To get the best result, you should learn to figure out what problem you want to solve and who are the people you want to help.
You can figure out who your ideal target customer or niche with the help of this blog – How To Find Your Perfect Niche.
Mistake #2 – You don’t know what your niche wants
Okay, so you have found your niche, now what?
Identifying your niche is one thing but knowing what your niche wants is another thing.
It’s ok if you are clueless of what your niche really wants when you are just starting out.
What you can do is put yourself in the shoes of your target customers.
- What questions do you think they have in mind?
- What issues do you think they want to address?
As you continue on creating content answering these questions and issues, you will see the responses of your audience.
You will see it through their engagement – likes, views, comments, shares.
Learn how to feel and analyze where your audience engages and focus on giving more related contents.
Mistake #3 – Focusing on vanity metrics
Most people focus on getting a large number of likes, followers and subscribers.
And then feel like the whole world is going to end when they see people are not liking their post, worse people are unfollowing them.
Likes, followers, subscribes – these numbers are what we call vanity metrics.
I will not be a hypocrite that these numbers don’t help.
Because really, who would look better, someone with at least 100 followers or someone with zero follower?
In a way, follower gives the audience an impression that you and your page is not a boring one.
But that is not the true metrics you should be worried about.
If you are an entrepreneur, your end goal is getting more sales and not more likes or follows.
Regardless if you have 1, 10, 100, 1000, 10k, 100k followers, if you are not generating any income, your vanity metrics doesn’t matter.
Focus on income generating activities such as – promoting your business, reaching out to people, doing business presentations or webinars, building your team if you are in network marketing.
Mistake #4 – Not focusing long-term
Focusing long-term means having a direction and end goal.
Most people who are building their business online especially on social media gets carried away doing the short-term tasks – posting selfies and doing TikTok videos.
But where are you really getting to with all of these?
Your daily tasks are an important part of building your business.
However, you should do these tasks with purpose.
If you are posting contents to gain followers, make sure these followers are people who will later become buyers or team members.
If you are posting content to promote your product, service or opportunity, make sure you are creating a relevant one and you are showing it in front of the right audience.
Mistake #5 – You’re not building an email list
Research shows that email marketing has an average Return On Investment (ROI) of $36 for every $1 spent.
As compared to social media marketing ROI of $2.80 for every $1 spent.
That’s a huge difference.
Another reason for building an email list is because it is an evergreen source of customers.
What do I mean by that?
Just imagine this.
What if one day Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and/or other social media platform decided to shut down?
And all your customers were built in your social media platforms.
That’s your business and years of hard work lost overnight.
But if you have an email list, that will not leave you with nothing.
You still have that list of people and a way to connect with them even when social media is no longer around.
So, if you are still not building your email list, you should start now.
Mistake #6 – Sharing on irrelevant platforms
When you are starting out, I know the first thing that comes to your mind is to get your post or link out there, everywhere as much as possible.
Because you have this hype to earn money fast.
What you don’t realize is that if you are pointlessly promoting your business everywhere, you are just wasting your time and effort if you are putting your business in front of the wrong people.
If you are trying to grow you business organically, you have to carefully pick which platforms or groups you should promote your business.
But if you are really serious about your business, I highly recommend taking advantage of the power of paid ads.
You don’t need to spend a big amount of money on ads.
In fact, you can get good result with the minimum amount allowed on ad spend – which around $1.50 per day – if you do it the right way.
And don’t think that spending on ads is a waste of money.
If you are serious about your business, you should know that marketing and promotion is part of business investment.
If you are not willing to invest on your business and take your business seriously, your business will not give you result like a real business does.
Mistake #7 – Giving up too early
You post one video to promote your business, you got zero engagement and sales, you conclude your business is not working.
For real?
But this is how most people conclude the their business is not working.
Particularly for network marketers and affiliate marketers, because these two are the type of a business that has a slow traction when starting out.
Even if we are talking about traditional business, when you do a business plan, the Return On Investment is often 3-5 years.
McDonald’s franchise is even projecting 8.5 years ROI, while Domino’s franchise projects 10 years ROI.
So don’t expect your small business to have an ROI in 1 day, 1 week, or 1 month.
Set your expectations and mindset properly.
Success will happen, that is for sure.
But it will not happen overnight.
